I'm not sure Stalin's quite the appropriate term for that...in that particular trend, I'd think of FDR as Lenin, Johnson as Stalin, and Clinton as Khrushchev.

I thought iomega went out of business like, 5 years ago...
Also, chances are the drive itself is ok, and the electronics are just shot. I'd bet at least one of the 5 bajillion engineering students at cmu could fix it pretty easily

If Iomega makes their drives as cheaply as Western Digital, then you've probably got a SATA drive inside, which you can get out and try connecting to a SATA-USB bridge.
USB controllers die before SATA controllers, so I'd say it's more likely that the bridge on your external drive itself--the one you connect your USB cable to--is damaged than the hard drive.
Granted, this assumes that Iomega makes their drives by simply building an enclosure around a standard SATA/PATA laptop drive, which may not be the case, but, it's worth a try.
Just, for the love of god, don't take it to Data Doctors.

Speaking of books, just got "The Gathering Storm" today in the mail at around 1. Did a bunch of other stuff for a bunch of the rest of the day, finished it a couple of minutes ago. That good.
