here's some unfair things: attractiveness is a prerequisite. until you're good looking, everything you do will be construed as creepy rather than charming or cute.

so, just be sure and be good looking, ok guys?

This is so true. I've never known a girl to say "I met such a smart guy today!" or "Oh my god, check him out, he's so cultured!"

It's always "OMG HOT GUY!!!!!!!"

And this is true even for girls I generally respect.

GUYS
DO
THE
SAME
THING

They notice when a pretty girl walks in the room. Smart girls? Smart girls are usually (don't start on the whole "I'm not like that" spiel, because I could go on and on about how I'm not like the girls you are all talking about, and it wouldn't matter) ignored or feared.

I was going to add a "guys do the same thing" caveat, but I forgot it. Sorry.
AK_WDB
No, guys do not fear girls for being smart. Guys fear girls who are so obsessed with this sexual liberation and independence and female empowerment bull that they think it's OK to throw someone's heart away whenever they damn well feel like it. (Yes, I know there are guys like this too.) I would characterize such people as immoral and selfish, not smart. There's a difference.

not saying that we don't.

but intelligence is, for me, a necessity in addition to attractiveness. i avoid stupid girls the same way i avoid ugly ones.

Yes, we have all heard of sarcasm. It's hard not to when so many people go around shouting "OMG THAT WAS SARCASTIC, I AM COOL BECAUSE I AM A SARCASTIC PERSON". It's funny because this makes them both not sarcastic and not cool.

Yes, they do. They are wildly intimidated by intelligence. Maybe you don't, but you're not the typical guy. I don't know what connection you're trying to make with the whole female empowerment to throwing someone's heart away thing, but I hope you're not implying that someone is a crazy feminist for pointing out some clear social inequalities.

Another thing: have any of you guys considered that having no luck with ladies is your fault? I'm sure most of you wouldn't date an ugly, creepy girl. Can you expect girls to make exceptions you wouldn't?

Och. I'm not that bad looking or creepy.

I wasn't saying you were. It's okay. But sometimes guys expect to have this perfect girl when they aren't so perfect themselves, and it's not fair.

I think I have some of the worst luck in love on these boards. I don't expect the perfect girl. Sure I would like a decent looking girl, but personality and brains are always more important. There was one girl who was very attractive who had some interest in me for a wile (mostly because I was older), but I would never pursue a relationship because her head was more empty than the stands at a Shakespeare festival in the Ozarks.

The coolest nonphysical thing I ever did with a girl(friend) was talk about the chemistry of Diet Coke and Mentos after we blew a bunch up in a park late at night and then talk about a Mountain Goats album we listened to on the way home while waging a constant war of puns. That took a pretty smart girl...and I enjoyed that fact.

I totally agree with this. Too often, smart girls tend to go way out of their way to flaunt how independent they are. Now, that partly comes from the way that society raises them, but still, I agree that the overly independent aspect tends to be what's repellent, not the intelligence.

I agree with debator that a dumb girl is totally unbearable. I know the same is true for many, many smart girls, regarding dumb guys. But those same smart girls don't notice smart guys (it's not their fault; in most social circumstances, that's a hard thing to notice) and rather get interested in the attractive ones they see. The smart guy that they would totally love if they got to know him all too often falls to the wayside. And I think that's what debator was getting at.

In a good relationship, that shouldn't be the case. Women still appreciate chivalry, which is why it would be nice for guys to pay for stuff especially in the beginning, but eventually reasonable girls will go dutch or foot the bill for things part of the time.
AK_WDB
Quick note: I do believe intelligence, at least the stereotypical academic type of intelligence, is NOT the most important thing in a relationship. Honesty, common sense, and devotion are far more important.

I have no trouble shelling out, but it just aggravates me that many girls complain about lack equality while their boyfriend pays for dinner and the movie tickets every time they go out.
