It's funny, I live in SoCal, where we're supposed to all be hedonists, but I don't remember any pregnant girls. Although there was one girl pregnant in my middle school shortly before I entered. I guess we're safe sex hedonists or something.

fun debate times: responsibility in parenting.

so, in hypothetical world, and 18 year old dude gets his 18 year old girlfriend pregnant. both have plans for college and ambitious plans for life, and as a result, abortion and adoption are heavily considered. the guy is pulling for abortion, but the girl decides against it, and decides not to put the baby up for adoption. both of these are her rights. BUT. there is this baby now, belonging to both the girl and the guy. the girl elected to keep it, the guy had no say. so why should he be compelled to stay with her and support the baby?

Because it would be the only honorable thing to do. You may disagree---I know that we have somewhat different moral compasses---but that is my opinion.

I don't necessarily think he should be legally obligated to stay with her. If he really is just a jerk who doesn't care about her or the baby at all, then she's probably better off without him. But if he has any decency at all, he should care.
debator
i think it's the honorable thing to do. i'm just less sure he should be automatically dubbed a jerk for leaving. they both made the decision to have sex, but she has control over the consequences in a way that he does not.

Common sense is in very short supply in high school. Some people take a lot longer to learn. It's dumb, but I guess you have to cut them some slack. Relieving he was kidding, though, hah!

Common sense is also in short supply in college. And in the real world, for the most part. This is a universal thing, really. We just aren't exposed to the less sensible parts until we get there, I'm afraid.

Fun Times: I am in Tucson at the moment, staying at a friend's house.

AF: And I have my laptop back! No data, tho. I feel kind of hopeful about the rebuilding process now, I guess...

Also I just caught two mice, guys.

UC: After investigating it a bit, I believe I suffer from insomnia. Hence, why I was posting at 1 AM last night, couldn't fall asleep for an hour after that, woke up at 6 AM, and am now posting at 7.

PS: I'm now registered to vote!

UC: I'm not cool enough to register for a third party; I want to vote in the 2010 primaries for the gubernatorial elections here.

There were like five in my graduating class, they were like turbo-whores though.

I'm not sure why, but this phrase sounded hilarious laugh.gif
iMatt
I certainly thought so tongue.gif

There were five chicks that were pregnant during the time I went to high school that I can remember. I'm pretty sure that it was a lot more, but those were five that I actually had classes with.

Pregnancy rates soar when you go to a public school in the inner city, I suppose.
debator
yeah man, i know what you mean. my school was right in the middle of the park meadow ghetto.
BadgerCam
RT: There is a bee in between my screen and my window.

now that I think about it, surprisingly, nobody in my class has gotten pregnant yet. But the class above me had a few. It kinda brought the rate up because my school is pretty small. If I'm not mistaken, the senior class decided to put a page in the yearbook with a bunch of the students who were parents and called it "Proud Parents". haha.
debator
you guys like no one got pregnant the whole time i was in high school. one girl in the class below me claimed to have, but then it turned out she was just trying to get her boyfriend to stay with her.

ironically, he dumped her immediately upon being told she was pregnant.

pleasant surprise: BUGLES.

They still make Bugles?

i tried to play myst once but i couldn't figure out the tutorial level.

also, i was thinking about it earlier today...this has been a week that strongly suggests the truth of solipsism.

HR: I've always wondered why I had to put a period between my first and last name when I made my email account. When I first signed up it said that I had an inappropriate word in my email so I had to put a period. I finally realized why. Turns out the last two letters of my first name and the first two letters of my last name spell out "nazi". greeeeeat.

hahahahahahahaha. no, please. my history teacher had a field day when he found out and now calls me nazi in class and in public. Example: I saw him at Starbucks and yells out "HEY NAZI!" Yeah, everyone looked and I just acted as if I had no idea what was going on.

Doesn't help the fact that I'm part german >.<

Solipsism takes doubt to such an extreme level though, having that much faith in your doubt (lol) is almost as extreme as fundamentalist religion.

It's so unrealistic to say that all the experiences and knowledge we've come across in our lives were essentially already there, that our minds are alone and creating interactions and vivid illusions of other minds around us.

Eh...
debator
quiet you. you're just a manifestation of some aspect of my psyche that wants to lead me away from the ultimate truth of solipsism.
TheWerg
PS/UC (depending on your perspective): Reading about solipsism rather than studying for APs.

I mean, I was already aware of the idea, but I'm giving it a more detailed treatment.

The Matrix has you Patrick!

This is my friend's club soccer team. They're playing in some kind of national championship this weekend. They've beaten the New Zealand national U-19 team. But of course no college recruits from them because they're all po' Mexicans.
debator
that's super weak. smurf you, colleges.
TheWerg
Well it generally makes sense; the majority of the team has like 0.7 GPAs and doesn't even know what SATs are. Then there's my friend, who's ranked like 15 in our class of 550 and is in 4 AP classes, even though he's a super poor Mexican from an uneducated family, his first language was Mexican, and there's not a single book in his house. And he still has time to work two jobs and commit a squillion hours to soccer. So he's basically Ivy League-level as an athlete, yet didn't get recruited at all. He got offered a pro contract for a quarter of a million dollars coming out of high school and coming from a family that probably makes a lot less than $40k a year, but is turning it down for a college education.

but yeah, i get what you're saying. that's super admirable that he's going for college rather than going pro.

I think it would be better for him to go to college. That way if he gets hurt, he something to fall back on. It still sucks that he won't get to on a soccer scholarship.

Edit: I got ninjaed badly.
debator
way to not get beat to that one.
TheWerg
Blah why do I always make that damn mistake? I'm such a lame white guy even though I'm part Mexican myself.

It was sorta weird though when I called his house and the answering machine was in SPANISH.

I just hope he can walk on with the UCLA soccer team.
debator
if he's getting a quarter million dollar contract, i bet he can. mls dudes don't make that much money usually.
TheWerg
BadgerCam, he agrees with you on the whole possibility of injury thing and the value of an education. It's just really hard to leave his family basically in the slums during those four years, you know? I think it's hard for us to understand because his background is so different. His neighborhood basically has a 1:1 drug dealer to average citizen ratio. He didn't get a cell phone until last year, and when he did, it was something he bought with his own money and pays for out of his pocket. He basically has no school supplies, and has to borrow my AP prep books or he doesn't get any. So while it's easy to say in theory that he should turn it down, it's very difficult in practice.

I understand completely. I takes a smart guy to know he can better provide for his family in the long run if he gets an education. I applaud him for his foresight and willpower.
iMatt
Methinks no matter what this guy goes into in college, it'll be next to impossible to make 250k starting off, and especially with just a 4 year degree, so more than likely he'll either be in college forever and a half or he'll have to reconsider that pro offer.
BadgerCam
If you go pro after you have a even a 2 year degree, you can fallback on something besides burger flipping if you get injured in a way that will end your career.
TheWerg
I think his hope is that either he'll get better in college and be able to get a similar contract afterward, or he'll have his degree if soccer doesn't pan out.

Also, he made me promise that if I start my own company, I'll give him a job. biggrin.gif

I didn't want to do the work the first time round, not going to want to do it again.

Also, I took that damn test without a calculator, and I STILL finished before other people..... how the hell does that work? blink.gif
