the general consensus on the question seems to be that it is awesome. now the question is: who will come in second at the 2011 collegiate world finals?
because first is already taken.
it is already taken by me.

I'm not going to ASU. That's why I said my school would not be as good as them.
I plan to go to Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University - Prescott Campus.

How about a message board division? The competitors there are just guys from this board that want to compete against each other and then take on the best teams at competitions, a la the Harlem Globetrotters.
^ That might just be awesome. Discuss.

Definitely leaning that way!
Thoughts on whether teams should be permitted to combine students from different colleges? My inclination is yes, as we do this in the other divisions... but interested in hearing your thoughts.

Judging by the support our assorted mock court/ model un teams get here, I think TCU might be somewhat receptive to fielding a team.
That aside, we could probably get a texas-college all-star team together...
Stanley? You in?

May 3 2009, 06:24 AM
I think it would be a good idea; there are colleges out there that are smaller than many high schools, so it could be a legitimate challenge to assemble an interested group there (although it's not highly likely). Also, I could see it being a fun way to reunite a group of friends who have parted ways after high school. I'd guess most people would just put together a team from their college anyway, but having the option is always nice.

I think it's probably best to allow it, but perhaps people should be encouraged to work with people around them as it would encourage people to prepare more. Maybe the Duke kids might team up with UNC kids, or ASU kids with U of A kids, or TCU and UT, but I think some kind of teaming up like that would be good for creating a team environment.

May 3 2009, 06:28 AM
I agree. My school is smaller than my high school, and a lot of the people there are clueless flight students or engineering students on cloud 9. It would be very hard to get a team together.
And would only traditional students be allowed?
Jonesy

I tend to think that the old model - in which we were defined by our colleges, or even our high schools - is giving way to a world in which people have much more fluid, and far-ranging, networks and associations. Which is a long-winded way of saying that I'm not sure it makes sense to limit people arbitrarily to teammates who happen to be in the same neighborhood.
Then again, practicing for the team events, the debate and the Bowl, would be difficult at a distance -- so spread-out teams might be at a disadvantage.

May 3 2009, 06:52 AM
i like being able to have teams transcend school: it lets you focus on the individuals rather than the institution.
Captaink
May 3 2009, 07:00 AM
I'm not so sure distance would be a problem for practicing. There are some pretty near telepresence tools that are free or almost free (skype, aim, I think apple iChat has a screen share function) Might be worthy of a FAQ section...
