Well, about a week off. We have a predictions thread, but here's one for discussion of the actual competition.
Region I will be held at Blue Ridge High School in Lakeside. This is the first ime in a few years it has not been held at Show ow High School, so it should be interesting.
Can anyone say where the other regionals are being held? The azacadec still has last year's places and dates. The sad thing is that they have a picture of last year's state relay on the page they never updated the info on.

The Region III competition will be held at Buena High School in Sierra Vista. This is the first time our regional competition has been held outside of Tucson. There are 21 teams attending. Look for the top teams to be Buena, CDO, Marana, and Marana Mtn. View. Catalina Foothills has a team again this year, and they might be good. Sonoran Science Academy may be a dark horse as well, and I know nothing about the Yuma teams, so there should be some good competition. Best of luck to all the teams!

Region IV will be at Mesquite High School in Gilbert. I'd like to have some scores ready to post that night, but I'll be at Regionals for NAQT (quizbowl) all of Saturday, so I might not have data until late that night.

Show Low hosted it the last two years, but the two years before that were Snowflake, and the two years before that were Blue Ridge. It usually oscillates between them, because no one wants to go to Springerville or St. Johns.
You're going to Region I, right?

Yep, I'm going.
I found evidence that Prescott used to be in that rotation, as did Flagstaff. I guess the loss of the Flag program and the unstable nature of the Prescott program kinda messed that up.

Hey Arizona people: at least in our region, there has been a change of schedule. In the past we've always taken the Lang & Lit test of Fridays, but at regionals we'll be taking all seven tests on Saturday, for the first time. No word on the reason for the change, and it wasn't announced, but I just noticed it on the schedule that we received tonight.

I'll be at the Region IV SQuiz / Awards ceremony, so I'll take some notes and try and post scores that night. And see if I can obtain some scores from Mountain Pointe's coach. Probably looking at a Mountain View steamrolling of the competition, but my kids, even if they are new, have a ton of potential and I think they can pick up a couple of awards. Honors competition should be the John (MVM), Alice (MVM) and Anna (Gilbert) show though. Should be fun.
The Evil Dr. Calculus
Feb 3 2010, 01:24 AM
Our honors competition won't quite be so fierce, but Nic, Anna, and Seungwoo (of CDO) have been within 100 points of eachother at the last couple competitions, and Quentin from Buena, scored over 8k at the last scrimmage. Don't forget Danielle, a junior from Marana Mtn. View - she's super at subjectives and not too shabby at the tests.

I think he was like, fourth or fifth overall. Which, being his first year, isn't too bad. If we're going to continue making comparisons of his potential to mine, my first year, I was fourth in-region. So, based on a roughly-hewn statistical model (my brain) I think he
could do as well or better than I did in '08. Now, the question is: Will he?
I hope so.

Any predictions for who might be the top ten of each category before state?
I fully expect the honors division to be a most excellent battle. Alice Lin, John Ernzen, Anna Borja, Betty Hsu, and Seungwoo Sun should almost certainly be over 8,000, with Nicolas Baird, Anna Hainsworth, and Brendon McNicholas all posing a pretty good chance to hit that mark as well. I'm going to predict Alice just beats out John, followed by Seungwoo just beating out Anna a bit below them. The remaining four I would imagine to be more clustered a bit below, and then there's probably a drop off before a couple mid-high 7,000s, and a very sizable number of low 7,000 scores.
Scholastic will be a toss-up beyond Tyler Searle, who should have the lead in the bag. Expect the top two from Westwood, the S2 and S3 from MVM, Humza Salim of Highland and potentially a couple of scholastics from CDO to be in the running for the other top slots.
The varsity division is by far the easiest to call. Granted he competes as a varsity, Joe Yu should sweep medals quite handily, with a bit of pressure from the MVM varsity duo, but not much to worry about. Rush and Jordan of CDO should have a lock on Region III, and I imagine they'll have a modest lead over the MVM C students for second and third in the state.

My junor year that was the econd place score. I got a 5500 and was only a couple of hundred points out of second. I think the varsities up here are better now than they where 2 years ago, at least on average.

If anybody here is going to be at district II regionals tomorrow [Deer Valley], I'll be there! I'm Xavier's team captain and hope to put up a good fight for Varsity, especially in music.
It makes that painful year of honors music theory
so worth it, since I laugh in the face of ternary form! If it was anything like last year, I hadn't studied and I was so worried that they'd be asking annoying questions about things like dominant phrygian mode. But no, the hardest theory question on there was asking for the name of a IV chord. *hahaha* [BTW, I
did study this year.]
Also, before anyone makes a smart ass remark about how bad XCP's Aca Dec team is compared to our other sports teams, consider the fact that only 2 or 3 members on our team of 6 have even opened the study guide [I being one of them]. I would be delighted if they even knew who Danton was, let alone anything about the Jacobins, Henri Gregoire, or Toussaint L'ouverture.

We're just in it to have fun.

Things I can report on:
-Mountain Pointe has two varsities that I just got to meet for the first time! Yipee!
-John Ernzen is a nice guy and always good to chat with, though Hari and I encountered him only briefly.
-Joe Yu is competing as a varsity. Expect some hardware.
-Humza Salim has been studying. Look out, scholastics.
-Marcos de Niza's coach takes graduate math courses in the same room as quizbowl is in, and right beforehand, which is pretty cool.
-AZAD isn't providing dinner. That beats one of the alternatives, though: the lack of metal medals.
-I feel really creepy in a room full of high school kids. I'm not meant to be ooooooollllllldddddd.
I should have relevant data Saturday night or Sunday afternoon.
